Lois Lowry’s sci-fi dystopian children’s novel ‘The Giver” is being adapted for the big screen. The film will star Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges and Brenton Thwaites.
The story follows a twelve year old boy named Jonas, played by Brenton Thwaite, who lives in a utopian society in which there is no conflict, racism or sickness, which eventually becomes a dystopian society. Bridges will play The Giver, a mentor to Jonas who is selected by his community to use his unique gifts of the senses. Streep will play the society’s Chief Elder, who assigns children their life task in the dystopian society.
The Giver will be released on August 15, 2014. Weinstein Co. decided to follow the successful pattern The Butler used by releasing the film during one of the box office’s slowest months.
The Giver will reportedly be filmed on a budget of $25 million. There’s no word yet of when production will officially begin.
