Dwayne Johnson to Voice Character in Disney’s ‘Moana’

Last seen playing mythical legend Hercules, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has signed on to voice Maui in Disney Animation’s CG-animated comedy-adventure Moana.

The film follows the story of Moana, a born navigator, in her search for a fabled island. During her journey, she teams up with the legendary demi-god Maui. The two traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering gigantic sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore.

Directing the animated feature is Ron Clements and John Musker; the duo teamed up multiple times to work on Disney classics, such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and The Princess and the Frog.

The title role of Moana has yet to be cast, however, it is likely to be announced soon considering the recent development on the project.

“Moana is indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself,” Musker said. “She’s the kind of character we all root for, and we can’t wait to introduce her to audiences.”

While Disney had no comment on Johnson’s casting, the actor tweeted this today, officially confirming the news:

“The Rock” will next be seen in Universal’s Furious 7, which is due out in April, and San Andreas, in May. Soon after, Johnson will play villain Black Adam in DC comic book adaptation Shazam.

Moana is expected to set sail sometime in 2016.
