Ben Stiller and producer Stuart Cornfeld have commissioned screenwriter Clay Tarver to write a sequel to Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.
The 2004 film starred Vince Vaughn as the owner of a small gym facing foreclosure. In order to save Average Joe’s gym, Vaughn and a group of his misfit “regulars” decide to enter a dodgeball tournament in hopes of winning the $50,000 grand prize. Meanwhile, Globo-Gym, owned by rival Ben Stiller, seeks to destroy the team’s hopes of saving Average Joe’s for his own amusement and profit.
Dodgeball grossed over $167 million worldwide on a budget of $20 million.
“I’ve always for some reason done real grounded stuff that was about a little subculture here or there,” Tarver admits. “Dodgeball is not very grounded, but it was very fun. It seemed like the right fit.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new film has Stiller and Vaughn teaming up to take down an even bigger threat.
“It’s really hard to get most movies made,” says Stiller. “Especially independent films, and even just regular, mid-range budgeted dramas. The genre movies and sequels are obviously what becomes the thing.”
No release date has been currently set for Dodgeball 2.
