The new format will allow fans to enjoy the superhero films in IMAX’s Expanded Aspect Ratio of 1.90:1, which fills home screens with 26% more of the movies’ images. Soon, IMAX Enhanced movies will also feature DTS surround sound, turning each subscriber’s home experience more and more like an IMAX movie theater. The project is set for release on Friday, promoted by the streaming giant as Disney+ Day in commemoration of the service’s two-year anniversary.
“Disney, Marvel Studios, and IMAX have collaborated for years to bring the world’s most popular films to the big screen, and on Friday we’ll start to bring IMAX technology to subscribers with IMAX Enhanced viewing in the Disney+ app,” said Disney+ President Michael Paull in a statement. “We’re thrilled to create new value for Marvel fans and audiences on Disney+, and we’re looking forward to offering even more IMAX Enhanced functionality in the future.”
“For more than a decade, IMAX has helped filmmakers take fans across the Marvel Cinematic Universe in theaters, and now that epic journey crosses into a new world: the home,” added IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond. “IMAX, Disney, and Marvel Studios are giving the fans what they want: the most immersive viewing experience throughout the life of a Marvel Studios film, from exclusive theatrical release to the library at-home where they can now watch the Avengers assemble with more picture than ever before.”
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be first released on the platform also on Nov. 12, featuring scenes in the IMAX Enhanced format. Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were entirely captured in IMAX-certified cameras, meaning every scene of the blockbusters will be available in the new aspect ratio. Other Marvel movies among the 13 re-released in the new format include:
Ant-Man and the Wasp
Black Panther
Black Widow
Captain America: Civil War
Captain Marvel
Doctor Strange
Iron Man
Guardians of the Galaxy
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Thor: Ragnarok
Disney+ Day
The Walt Disney Co. has more in store for Disney+ Day, including a $1.99 deal for one month of the platform’s services, instead of the usual $7.99 price. The deal is available for new and returning customers until Nov. 14.
Despite being in the streaming business for just two years, Disney+ is already reaching uncharted territory. The platform is becoming the first major streaming company to offer IMAX Enhanced content in an attempt to turn home streaming into a true cinema-like experience.
