Grab a hanky or an insulin shot and get ready. Will Smith may have passed on more close encounters in this summer’s Independence Day: Resurgence, but he’s about to experience the connections that make us human: love, time and death. Collateral Beauty (set to open December 16) is a melodrama from David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada, Julie & Julia) with Smith starring as an ad executive who writes letters as a coping mechanism after suffering a deep, personal loss.
“Love, time, death — these three things connect every single human being on Earth. We long for love, we wish we had more time, and we fear death.”
The film looks to pull heartstrings the same way Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life did so 70 years ago. Only the twist has Smith’s character meeting with the human personifications of Death, Time and Love, not an angel. Joining Smith is a star-studded ensemble that includes Edward Norton, Keira Knightley, Michael Peña (Ant-Man), Naomie Harris (SPECTRE), and Jacob Latimore (The Maze Runner), with Oscar winners Kate Winslet (The Reader) and Helen Mirren (The Queen).
Here’s the first official trailer for Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema’s Collateral Beauty.
