Chris Pratt is the voice of the title character in the upcoming animated movie Garfield, starring the iconic comic strip star of the same name, the actor announced on Monday (of all days) with a photo of the fully-animated cat.
Alcom Entertainment is producing the movie with director Mary Dindal (Chicken Little) and screenwriter David Reynolds (Finding Nemo). Dindal and Reynolds have worked on together in 2000’s The Emperor’s New Groove. Garfield’s original creator Jim Davis is also on the team as an executive producer. Sony Pictures will distribute the movie worldwide (excluding China), although a release date has yet to be announced.
Who is Garfield?
For the few out there who never heard of Garfield, he is a lazy and sarcastic fluffy orange cat, mostly known for hating Mondays and loving lasagnas. The cat lives with his owner and cartoonist Jon Arbuckle and his dog Odie. The character was created by Davis, making his debut in comic sections of 41 newspapers back in 1978. Since then, Garfield has become the most widely syndicated comic strip on the planet. The cat’s success grew so much that he made it to the big screen in 2005’s live-action animated hybrid Garfield, voiced by Bill Murray. The movie earned $200 million and a sequel in 2006, titled Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties, which made $143 million.
Chris Pratt’s roles
Pratt has been building quite a resume when it comes to voice acting lately. After voicing Emmet in The Lego Movie series and Barley in Pixar’s Onward, the actor recently landed the role of Mario in Nintendo’s upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie. Pratt also holds protagonist roles in ongoing series of live-action blockbuster movies such as Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World.
