By this point, Steven Soderbergh has retired and un-retired from making films as many times as a wrestler has one last “career” match. This summer he makes his way back to the big screen with Logan Lucky, a comedy that looks like a cross between Stanley Kubrick’s The Killing and Adam McKay’s Talladega Nights starring Will Ferrell. An odd combination for sure, but one that just may provide a fuel-injected spark for Bleecker Street when the film opens on August 18th.
The trailer made its debut on a day in which the United States honored those men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice defending our freedoms and liberties. And nothing says America like NASCAR. Take the famed Coca-Cola 600 race and hatch a bumbling heist that would make Danny Ocean shake his head and you have Logan Lucky. Soderbergh has gathered a talented ensemble where we see him reunite with his Magic Mike star Channing Tatum along with Adam Driver, who play brothers Jimmy and Clyde Logan, as they set to execute an elaborate robbery at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Along the way they enlist the help of “newcomer” Daniel Craig (as Joe Bang) to help pull off the job.
Logan Lucky is written by Rebecca Blunt, who makes her feature screenwriting debut. As for the ensemble, the cast includes the likes of Seth MacFarlane (TV’s “Family Guy”), Riley Keough (American Honey), Katie Holmes, Katherine Waterson (Alien: Covenant), Dwight Yoakam, Sebastian Stan (MCU’s Winter Soldier), and Oscar winner Hilary Swank.
