Lionsgate’s highly anticipated sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire delivered huge ticket sales its first weekend at the box office, pulling in a whopping $161.1 million between Thursday and Sunday. The film outgrossed its predecessor’s $152 million opening with the weekend’s massive sales, and snagged the titled as the best November debut of all time ahead of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which earned $142.9 million in 2009.
The only three films that have ever opened higher than Catching Fire: The Avengers ($207.4 million), Iron Man 3 ($174.1 million), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($169.2 million).
Thor: The Dark World spent its third weekend in second place this weekend, selling $14.1 million in tickets, for a three-week total of $167.8 million. Malcolm D. Lee’s comedic sequel The Best Man Holiday, which stars Taye Diggs, Regina Hall, and Terrence Howard, came in at third place this weekend. The film took in $12.5 million, for a two-week total of $50.4 million.
Delivery Man delivered $8.2 million worth of ticket sales. Free Birds sold $5.3 million in its fourth weekend.
