Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit 2: The Desolation of Smaug remains the top film at the box office for the third straight week with $29.9 million. While preliminary reports indicated that Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street could be a major contender for the top spot at the box office, that didn’t even up being the case.
Instead, it was parents and children who flocked to theaters across the nation to watch Disney’s Frozen. The animated film saw a 47% increase in sales in its sixth week and earned a stellar $28.8 million for second place.
Will Ferrell’s Anchorman 2 took third place in its sophomore week with $20.2 million for the weekend. The comedy has earned well over $100 million worldwide thanks to a $25 million boost from international markets. On Christmas Day the film opened in third place with $8.1 million.
David O. Russell’s American Hustle, starring an ensemble cast of Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence, earned $19.6 million in its third week for fourth place. The film has made the majority of its $62 million box office gross in North America.
Although The Wolf of Wall Street debuted with $9.15 million to take second place at the box office on Christmas Day (behind The Hobbit’s $9.32 million) , it was unable to keep up the pace for the overall weekend. Martin Scorsese’s latest venture dropped to fifth place for the Christmas weekend with $18.5 million in its first week. The film is based on the real-life story of stockbroker Jordan Belfort.
Justin Bieber’s latest release, Believe, didn’t even register in the top 10 films of the weekend. The documentary earned only $2 million with a pathetic $1,942 per theater average over the weekend.
