Fox/Chernin Entertainment’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children dominated the weekend box office with $28.5 million from 3,522 theaters.
Miss Peregrine’s, based on a novel by Ransom Riggs, follows a 16 year-old (Asa Buterfield) who moves to a mysterious island where he meets Miss Peregrine (Eva Green) and the orphaned children who possess special powers. It earned a B-plus CinemaScore and a 64 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics.
Chris O’Dowd, Allison Janney, Rupert Everett, Terence Stamp, Ella Purnell, Judi Dench and Samuel L. Jackson also star.
“It’s a promising start, but it’s too early to tell,” Fox domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson said. “There are multiple books and they are best-sellers, so the door is open.”
The fantasy adventure blew past Pete Berg’s oilrig disaster feature Deepwater Horizon, which debuted in second place with $20.6 million from 3,259 locations.
Deepwater Horizon – a collaboration between Mark Wahlberg and director Berg – is based on the true story of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The action film, starring Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O’Brien and Kate Hudson, received an 82 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A-minus CinemaScore.
In third place at the box office is Antoine Fuqua’s Western remake The Magnificent Seven with an estimated $15.7 million, for a domestic cume of $61.6 million. Animated film Storks and Tom Hanks’ Clint Eastwood-directed rescue drama Sully round out the top five with $13.8 million and $8.4 million, respectively.
Masterminds – starring Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig and Jason Sudekis – also debuted this weekend from Relativity, opening in sixth place with a dismal $6.6 million from 3,042 locations. The comedy received a 38 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes and a B-minus CinemaScore.
