Box Office Recap: ‘The Other Woman’ Rules With $24.7M Debut
Twentieth Century Fox’s revenge comedy “The Other Woman” dominated the box office this weekend with a strong $24.7 million debut, knocking three-week champion Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” from the top spot. The $40 million film stars Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton as a wife, a girlfriend, and a mistress who find out they are all being betrayed by the same guy and decide to take revenge on the three-timing spouse, who is played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from HBO’s Game of Thrones.
“Captain America” landed in second place after topping the weekend box office for the past three weeks, earning $16 million during its fourth weekend at the box office. Sony Pictures’ afterlife drama “Heaven is for Real” placed third with $13 million, “Rio 2” placed fourth with $13 million and Eurocorp’s “Brick Mansions” rounded out the top five earning $9 million during its first weekend playing on 2,400 screens. The District B13 remake is notably among the last films featuring the late Paul Walker.
Warner Bros’ sci-fi drama “Transcendence” earned $4.1 million at the box office this weekend, while Lionsgate’s horror film “The Quiet Ones” dropped on 2,000 screens and earned $4 million during its first weekend, Paramount’s “Divergent” earned $3.6 million during its sixth weekend, and “A Haunted House 2” earned $3.2 million during its second weekend.

10. A Haunted House 2 – $3.265 million

9. Divergent – $3.6 million

DIVERGENT is a thrilling action-adventure film set in a world where people are divided into distinct factions based on human virtues. Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy by a faction leader (Kate Winslet) to destroy all Divergents, Tris must learn to trust in the mysterious Four (Theo James) and together they must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late. Based on the best-selling book series by Veronica Roth.
8. Bears – $3.606 million

7. The Quiet Ones – $4 million
Film Synopsis:
From the producer who brought you The Woman In Black and Let Me In comes the unnerving tale of The Quiet Ones. Tucked away in an estate outside of London, Professor Coupland along with a team of university students conduct an “experiment” on Jane Harper, a young girl who harbors unspeakable secrets. What dark forces they uncover are more terrifying than any of them expected. Inspired by true events, the film stars Jared Harris (“Mad Men” and SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS), Sam Claflin (THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE), Olivia Cooke (“Bates Motel”), and is directed by John Pogue from a screenplay by Craig Rosenberg and Oren Moverman and John Pogue, and based on a screenplay by Tom de Ville.
6. Transcendence – $4.105 million
Film Synopsis:
Dr. Will Caster is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn and friend Max, both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can… but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power—to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.
5. Brick Mansions – $9.6 million
Film Synopsis:
In a dystopian Detroit, abandoned brick mansions left from better times now house only the most dangerous criminals. Unable to control the crime, the police constructed a colossal containment wall around this area to protect the rest of the city. Undercover cop Damien Collier (Walker) is determined to bring his father’s killer Tremaine (RZA) to justice and every day is a battle against corruption. For Lino (Belle), every day is a fight to live an honest life. Their paths never should have crossed, but when Tremaine kidnaps Lino’s girlfriend, Damien reluctantly accepts the help of the fearless ex-convict, and together they must stop a sinister plot to devastate the entire city.
4. Rio 2 – $13.65 million
Film Synopsis:
The entire cast of the animated smash RIO returns in RIO 2, and they are joined by a new flock of top actors and musical talents. Rich with grandeur, character, color and music, RIO 2 finds Jewel (Anne Hathaway), Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) and their three kids leaving their domesticated life in that magical city for a journey to the Amazon. They encounter a menagerie of characters who are born to be wild, voiced by Oscar nominee Andy Garcia, Oscar/Emmy/Tony-winner Rita Moreno, Grammy winner Bruno Mars, and Tony winner Kristin Chenoweth.
