Twentieth Century Fox’s revenge comedy “The Other Woman” dominated the box office this weekend with a strong $24.7 million debut, knocking three-week champion Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” from the top spot. The $40 million film stars Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton as a wife, a girlfriend, and a mistress who find out they are all being betrayed by the same guy and decide to take revenge on the three-timing spouse, who is played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from HBO’s Game of Thrones.
“Captain America” landed in second place after topping the weekend box office for the past three weeks, earning $16 million during its fourth weekend at the box office. Sony Pictures’ afterlife drama “Heaven is for Real” placed third with $13 million, “Rio 2” placed fourth with $13 million and Eurocorp’s “Brick Mansions” rounded out the top five earning $9 million during its first weekend playing on 2,400 screens. The District B13 remake is notably among the last films featuring the late Paul Walker.
Warner Bros’ sci-fi drama “Transcendence” earned $4.1 million at the box office this weekend, while Lionsgate’s horror film “The Quiet Ones” dropped on 2,000 screens and earned $4 million during its first weekend, Paramount’s “Divergent” earned $3.6 million during its sixth weekend, and “A Haunted House 2” earned $3.2 million during its second weekend.
