Universal Pictures and Legendary’s Jurassic World stunned the domestic box office this weekend with an outstanding $204.6 million in over 4,273 theaters, and an estimated $511.8 million worldwide – making it the highest-grossing global opening ever.
Launching 22 years after Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, the $150 million-produced blockbuster exceeded all expectations, scoring much more than what analysts predicted.
Jurassic World, directed by Colin Trevorrow, started the weekend with a bang when it debuted with $82.8 million – the biggest opening day for the month of June, the all-time biggest debut for a PG-13 launch, and the third-biggest opening day ever. It finished the weekend with a strong sum, ranking as the second-biggest opening in history, just ahead of this May’s Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.3 million) and behind 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers ($207.4 million debut).
“This is really unprecedented in terms of shattering expectations,” said Phil Contrino, vice president and chief analyst at BoxOffice.com. “They rebooted it in just a really smart way. Universal’s marketing campaign was exceptional. They just nurtured this thing and the trailers were excellent.”
