Box Office Recap: ‘Instructions Not Included’ Largest Spanish Opening Ever

Directed by Lee Daniels, The Butler came out victorious over Morgan Suprlock’s One Direction: This Is Us documentary at the Labor Day box office.

Staring Oprah Winfrey and Oscar winner Forest Whitaker, the Warner Bros film brought in over $20 million this weekend, making it the first film of 2013 to top the North American charts three weekends in a row.

One Direction: This Is Us took in an estimated $18 million while We’re The Millers came in third with $13 million.

The big surprise at this weekend’s box office was Eugenio Derbez’s Instructions Not Included.  While the film took fourth place, it earned a staggering $22, 547 per screen in 348 theaters nationwide, four times the earnings of One Direction: This Is Us.  The interesting thing about this film is that although it is both in English and subtitled Spanish, it still earned $10 million over Labor Day weekend, making it the biggest opening ever for a Spanish-language film in North America.
