It seemed as if moviegoers were in the mood for a little horror this weekend. Insidious Chapter 2, the second biggest September debut, dominated the North American box office this weekend with, what some are saying, the best opening of all time for the horror genre.
The Film District sequel brought in $20.06 million on its opening night, Friday the 13th, and $41.05 million for the entire weekend, more than tripling the opening take for the original film.
Also opening over the weekend was Lus Besson’s The Family, which placed second with $14.5 million. In return, bumping last week’s champ, Riddick, to number three.
Lastly, Weinstein Co.’s The Butler is continuing to hold a strong performance. Over the course of the weekend the historical film managed to cross the $100 million mark, ending its fifth weekend with $100.3 million under its belt.
Debuting at the box office this weekend is the 3D dance movie Battle of the Year as well as Warner Brother’s Prisoners.
