Gravity, starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, was the big winner at the weekend box office for the second week in a row. The Warner Bros’ $100 million sci-fi thriller earned $44 million over the weekend, bringing its box office total to $123 million.
Tom Hank’s Somalian piracy thriller, Captain Phillips, earned a respectable $26 million in its debut weekend. Although the film earned $18 million less than Gravity, Captain Phillips is receiving excellent reviews and a TON of Oscar buzz, being compared to last year’s Oscar contender Flight starring Denzel Washington. Captain Phillips is Tom Hank’s biggest live-action debut since Angels & Demons back in 2009.
Without any competition at the box office in the “family-friendly” genre, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 earned $14 million over the weekend. The film has matched its budget with $78 million in total earnings. Machete Kills 2 earned a pathetic $3.79 million over the weekend, making it Robert Rodriguez’s lowest-grossing wide opening in his career.
