Box Office Recap: ‘Fault in Our Stars’ Tops ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ for No. 1
The Fault in Our Stars overpassed the expected goal this weekend, making $48.2 million in its domestic debut. Its three-day box-office total is more than four times the cost of the romantic drama, which had a $12 million budget.
The romance film beat their weekend competitor Edge of Tomorrow, which made $29.1 million domestically and $82 million internationally – ranking third place in the box office.
Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent slid to second place on the charts, grossing $33.5 million in its second week. In total, Disney’s re-imagined Sleep Beauty fairy tale made $335.5 million globally.
In North America, audience members gave the action film Edge of Tomorrow a B+ CinemaScore, and a solid A for Fault in Our Stars. Fault received an 82 percent score on survey site Rotten Tomatoes by critics.
The science fiction film Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, appealed more to males (61 percent of its audience) and moviegoers older than 25 (73 percent of its audience). On the other hand, Twentieth Century Fox said that Fault had an overwhelming 82 percent of female moviegoers.
“They’re just two very different movies and the fact they’re both on the same weekend, it’s not one versus the other,” said Jeff Goldstein, head of domestic distribution for Warner Bros. ”But there is something really special about a movie like Fault, where an audience really rallied around it.”
Sony’s comedy sequel 22 Jump Street, starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, had a week early international release and grossed $8.8 million. Next weekend will be the weekend of sequels as 22 opens alongside DreamWork’s How to Train Your Dragon 2.

10. Million Dollar Arm – $1.8 million
Film Synopsis
Based on a true story, Disney’s “Million Dollar Arm” follows JB Bernstein, a once-successful sports agent who now finds himself edged out by bigger, slicker competitors. He and his partner Aash (Aasif Mandvi) will have to close their business down for good if JB doesn’t come up with something fast. Late one night, while watching cricket being played in India on TV, JB comes up with an idea so radical it just might work. Why not go to there and find the next baseball pitching sensation? Setting off for Mumbai with nothing but a gifted but cantankerous scout (Alan Arkin) in tow, JB stages a televised, nationwide competition called “Million Dollar Arm” where 40,000 hopefuls compete before two 18-year-old finalists, Rinku and Dinesh (Suraj Sharma, Madhur Mittal), emerge as winners. JB brings them back to the United States to train with legendary pitching coach Tom House (Bill Paxton). The goal: get the boys signed to a major league team. Not only is the game itself difficult to master, but life in the U.S. with a committed bachelor makes things even more complicated-for all of them. While Rinku and Dinesh learn the finer points of baseball and American culture, they in turn teach JB the true meaning of teamwork and commitment. Ultimately, what began as a purely commercial venture becomes something more and leads JB to find the one thing he was never looking for at all-a family.
9. Chef – $2.6 million
Film Synopsis
Chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) suddenly quits his job at a prominent Los Angeles restaurant after refusing to compromise his creative integrity for its controlling owner (Dustin Hoffman), he is left to figure out what’s next. Finding himself in Miami, he teams up with his ex-wife (Sofia Vergara), his friend (John Leguizamo) and his son to launch a food truck. Taking to the road, Chef Carl goes back to his roots to reignite his passion for the kitchen — and zest for life and love.
8. Blended – $4.0 million
Film Synopsis
After a disastrous blind date, single parents Lauren and Jim agree on only one thing: they never want to see each other again. But when they each sign up separately for a fabulous family vacation with their kids, they are all stuck sharing a suite at a luxurious African safari resort for a week in “Blended,” the third comedy collaboration between stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.
7. Neighbors – $5.2 million
Film Synopsis
Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Rose Byrne lead the cast of Neighbors, a comedy about a young couple suffering from arrested development who are forced to live next to a fraternity house after the birth of their newborn baby. Neighbors is directed by Nick Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek).
6. Godzilla – $5.9 million

5. A Million Ways to Die in the West – $7.1 million
Film Synopsis
Seth MacFarlane directs, produces, co-writes and plays the role of the cowardly sheep farmer Albert in A Million Ways to Die in the West. After Albert backs out of a gunfight, his fickle girlfriend leaves him for another man. When a mysterious and beautiful woman rides into town, she helps him find his courage and they begin to fall in love. But when her husband, a notorious outlaw, arrives seeking revenge, the farmer must put his newfound courage to the test. Starring alongside MacFarlane are Oscar (R) winner Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, Giovanni Ribisi, Sarah Silverman and Neil Patrick Harris. MacFarlane reunites many of the filmmakers behind Universal and MRC’s hit film Ted including Scott Stuber (Bluegrass Films) and Jason Clark who produce, and Wellesley Wild and Alec Sulkin who co-wrote the script.
4. X-Men: Days of Future Past – $14.7 million

The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from the past, “X-Men: First Class,” in order to change a major historical event and fight in an epic battle that could save our future.
3. Edge of Tomorrow – $29.1 million

The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop-forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.
