Box Office Recap: ‘Doctor Strange’ Bewitches With $85M

Marvel-Disney’s Doctor Strange dominated the box office this weekend, racking up $85 million from 3,882 locations in North America and a global total of $325.4 million.

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular superhero, the film boasted positive reviews (90 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes) and a strong A CinemaScore from moviegoers.

Doctor Strange follows a brilliant surgeon, named Stephen Strange, who turns to the mystical arts following a car accident that destroyed his hands. Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tilda Swinton also star.

In second place at the box office is DreamWorks Animation and Fox’s Trolls with $45.6 million from 4,060 theaters. The animated musical – starring Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick – is based on the popular children’s doll. Timberlake served as an executive producer of the movie soundtrack, which includes his original hit song “Can’t Stop the Feeling.”

Trolls tells the story of two trolls who must save their village from destruction by the Bergens, who love to eat the little creatures. It received a decent 74 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and an A CinemaScore from moviegoers.

Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge followed in third place with $14.8 million from 2,886 theaters. The film is about conscientious objector Desmond Doss, played by Andrew Garfield, who won the Medal of Honor for saving more than 75 lives as a medic during the Battle of Okinawa. Vince Vaughn and Teresa Palmer co-star.

The film earned an A CinemaScore from audiences and an 87 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics.

Rounding out the top five in fourth and fifth place is Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween and Inferno with $7.8 million and $6.3 million, respectively. The Halloween comedy accumulated a total of $65 million since its debut, while the third installment in Dan Brown’s The Da Vinvi Code series racked up $26.1 million.
