It was a tight race for first place at the worldwide box office this weekend. Disney-Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier fought to remain in first, as Fox’s family-friendly, newcomer Rio 2 flew into theaters.
Captain America would end up being the victor, both domestically and abroad. In the United States, the Chris Evans-fronted sequel grossed $41.4 million in its sophomore week, bringing the film’s domestic total to $159 million. Meanwhile, Rio 2 opened with a strong $39 million in its debut weekend. Globally, Rio 2 fell short of Captain America’s $102 million take with $101.3 million.
Relativity Media’s first low-budget horror film Oculus met expectations with $12 million in it debut weekend. The film cost just $5 million to produce.
One newcomer that significantly underperformed at the box office was Kevin Costner’s sports drama Draft Day, earning just $9.75 million in its first three days. The adult male-targeted film has a current rating of 7/10 on iMDB.
