Box Office Recap: Both ‘Jurassic World’ And ‘Inside Out’ Triumph

Universal’s Jurassic World and Disney and Pixar’s newcomer Inside Out battled it out at the box office this weekend, with the dinosaur action film taking the lead once more with a massive $102 million, breaking Pixar’s box office debut winning streak.

The sequel has accumulated a domestic total of $398.2 million and worldwide total of $981.3 million in just two weeks, passing Jurassic Park’s 357.1 million and becoming the highest-grossing domestic release in the franchise’s history.

Although it didn’t land at number one at the box office, Inside Out was equally as successful, scoring a stellar $91 million and becoming the best opening for an original Pixar title and the second best of any Pixar film behind Toy Story 3 ($110.3 million). In addition, the brainy family feature ranks as the top opening for an original, non-sequel property, surpassing Avatar’s $77 million debut.

Directors Pete Docter (Up) and Ronnie Del Carmen’s Inside Out, which cost $175 million to produce, revolves around a young girl and her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness – who try to protect her when she is upset by her family’s move to San Francisco.

“John Lasseter has said that quality is the best business plan, and the cornerstone of every Pixar release. Quality in this case translated into Inside Out becoming the biggest original opening in the history of the movie business by a stretch. It’s so relatable with its characters, so sophisticated, drawing in both adults and families. We knew we had something extraordinary when 9 p.m. shows were selling out,” said Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis.

Movie Review: Pixar’s ‘Inside Out’ Is A ‘Great And Necessary Experience’ For All

Audience members, who were 56 percent female and 38 percent under the age of 12, gave Inside Out an A CinemaScore, while critics gave it an outstanding 98 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The weekend’s other new release was Rick Famuyiwa’s coming-of-age story Dope, which came in fifth place with a mediocre $6 million from 2,002 theaters. The film earned an A minus CinemaScore from moviegoers, as well as a 90 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“When you have two movies doing almost $200 million in the marketplace, it’s tough for much else to cut through,” said Cassidy. “The great news is we have a great movie that plays great.”

Dope came in behind holdovers Spy and San Andreas, respectively. In third place, Fox’s Spy gathered $10.5 million for a domestic total of $74.4 million and a global total of $170.4 million, while disaster film San Andreas snagged fourth place with an additional $8.2 million for a domestic total of $132.2 million. At the worldwide box office, the film has already exceeded the $400 million mark.
