The big story from this weekend’s box office was not Thor: The Dark World remaining at number one, but rather the outstanding success of Malcolm D. Lee’s The Best Man Holiday.
A sequel to the 1999 film The Best Man, the film featuring an ensemble cast of Taye Diggs, Terrence Howard, Harold Perrineau, Morris Chestnut,Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, and Regina Hall debuted with a remarkable $30.5 million. The number shocked Hollywood analysts since the original film debuted with $9 million and earned $34 million in its domestic run (almost what The Best Man Holiday did opening weekend). The film debuted with a $10.7 million total on Friday, beating Thor: The Dark World for the top spot at the box office that day.
Even though The Best Man Holiday had a phenomenal opening, Thor: The Dark World still remained king at the box office. In it’s second week, Thor grossed an additional $38.4 million domestically, bringing its North American total to $146.9 million. The big story for Thor has been it’s success overseas. Before even opening in the United States, the film had already surpassed the $100 million internationally. Now, the film has grossed almost 70% of it’s revenue ($332.8 million) thanks to significant box office sales in countries such as the United Kingdom ($22.3 million), China ($21.9 million) and Mexico ($15.5 million). Worldwide, the film has earned $479.7 million and is expected to surpass the $500 million mark this week.
