Box Office Preview: ‘Suicide Squad’ To Stay No.1 Despite Newcomers ‘Sausage Party,’ ‘Pete’s Dragon’, ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’
Holdover Suicide Squad is expected to maintain the top spot at the box office in its second outing, according to analysts.
The supervillain film debuted last weekend with a strong $133.7 million, scoring the best August debut of all time despite negative critic reviews. This time around, Squad is expected to earn somewhere between $47-$54 million, a steep 60-65 percent decline.
Newcomers for the weekend include Sony and Annapurna’s Sausage Party, Disney’s Pete’s Dragon and Paramount’s Florence Foster Jenkins.
Sausage Party, produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, is expected to debut within the $15-$20 million range from 2,800 theaters. The film, set in a supermarket, tells the story of one sausage leading a group of other food products on a quest to discover the truth about their existence and what really happens when they become chosen to leave the grocery store…. which (to their horror) involves being eaten.
The voice cast includes Michael Cera, James Franco, Salma Hayek, Jonah Hill, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, Danny McBride, Edward Norton, Paul Rudd, Kristen Wiig and Rogen.
Currently, the film holds an 84 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Pete’s Dragon garners an 88 percent “fresh” rating.
Pete’s Dragon, starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley and Robert Redford, is predicted to open in the mid-$20-$25 million range from 3,702 theaters.

Directed by David Lowery, the story follows the adventures of an orphaned boy living in the woods and his best friend Elliot, who happens to be a giant dragon. Wes Bentley, Oona Laurence and Karl Urban Jr. also star.
The highest “fresh” Rotten Tomatoes score goes to Florence Foster Jenkins, starring Meryl Streep, with 89 percent.
Directed by Stephen Frears, the film – based on the real-life story of a New York heiress who dreamed of becoming an opera singer, despite her terrible singing voice – is expected to debut in the $5 million-$8 million range from 1,500 locations. Hugh Grant, Simon Helberg, Rebecca Ferguson and Nina Arianda also star.
