Box Office Preview: ‘Suicide Squad’ To Crush Newcomers ‘Ben-Hur,’ ‘War Dogs’ & ‘Kubo’

For the third weekend in a row, Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad is predicted to lead the pack of newcomers once more, projected to add another $20 million to its grand total.

The weekend’s first box office newcomer, Timur Bekmambetov’s Ben-Hur – a faith-based film targeted at Christians – is expected to finish with a dismal $12 million U.S. launch from 3,084 locations, according to early estimates.

The reboot of the 1959 film, which currently holds a 31 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes, follows a man who is falsely accused of treason by his childhood friend and adoptive brother. Jack Huston, Toby Kebbell, Rodrigo Santoro, Nazanin Boniadi and Morgan Freeman star.

The other new offerings for the weekend include Todd Phillips’ war comedy War Dogs and the animated Kubo and the Two Strings.

War Dogs, starring Miles Teller and Jonah Hill, is debuting in 3,258 theaters and is forecasted to take in around $15 million domestically. The R-rated comedy is based on a true story of two men who won a $300 million contract from the Pentagon to arm America’s allies in Afghanistan. The film currently holds a 59 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The final weekend newcomer goes to Kubo and the Two Strings, which is projected to debut with $14.5 million for the weekend at 3,260 locations. The film is set in ancient Japan and centered on a boy’s quest to reassemble a magical suit of armor. Charlize Theron, Art Parkinson, Ralph Fiennes, George Takei, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Rooney Mara and Matthew McConaughey star as the voice cast.

Critic reviews have been positive towards the film, which currently stands at a strong 96 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
