Box Office Preview: ‘Secret Life Of Pets’ To Dethrone ‘Finding Dory’

Chris Rinaud’s Secret Life of Pets is off to a strong start – aiming to dethrone Finding Dory from the top spot at the box office.

The Illumination Entertainment and Universal film, which reveals what pets do after their human friends leave the house, is on track to earn in the mid- to high $30 million range Friday on its way to a $90 million-plus weekend debut.

The voice cast includes Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet and Kevin Hart, Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Dana Carvey, Hannibal Buress, Bobby Moynihan, Steve Coogan and Albert Brooks.

The weekend’s other new wide release is Chernin Entertainment and Fox’s raunchy comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, starring Zac Efron and Adam DeVine. The R-rated film, directed by Jake Szymanski, is expected to earn around $6 million Friday for a debut in the $13 million to $16 million range.

The film follows two brothers who place an online ad to find the perfect dates (Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza) for their sister’s wedding. Hoping for a wild getaway, the boys instead find themselves outsmarted and out-partied by the uncontrollable duo.
