Box Office Preview: ‘Miss Peregrine’s’ To Beat ‘Deepwater Horizon’

Tim Burton’s newest film Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is on track to beat Pete Berg’s action drama Deepwater Horizon.

Based on a novel by Ransom Riggs, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children follows a 16 year-old named Jake who moves to a mysterious island where he meets Miss Peregrine and the orphaned children who possess special powers. Currently, the film holds a 64 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics.

The adventure fantasy, which cost $110 million to produce, is projected to earn roughly $26 million-28 million for the weekend from 3,522 locations. It earned $1.8 million in Thursday-night previews, and is expected to take in $9 million on Friday.

It stars Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Chris O’Dowd, Allison Janney, Rupert Everett, Terence Stamp, Ella Purnell, Judi Dench and Samuel L. Jackson.

The weekend’s other newcomer, Deepwater Horizon – a collaboration between Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg – is eyeing an $18 million-$20 million weekend debut from 3,259 theaters, including a $7 million on Friday.

The film, based on the true story of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, stars Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O’Brien and Kate Hudson. Deepwater holds an 81 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes, thus far.

Masterminds – starring Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig and Jason Sudekis – also debuts this weekend from Relativity. The comedy is estimated to bring in $2 million on Friday and $4 million-$6 million for the weekend.
