Box Office Preview: ‘Conjuring 2’ Scaring Off Competitors
New Line’s The Conjuring 2 is expected to dominate the box office this weekend – already scaring off the competition.
Opening day estimates for the horror sequel is ranging from $15 million to $18 million. For the weekend, estimates vary from $33 million to $37 million from 3,343 locations – a 12 percent drop from 2013’s The Conjuring launch ($41.9 million).

Meanwhile, the weekend’s other new releases – Now You See Me 2 and Warcraft – are expected to debut with $21-25 million from 3,400 theaters and $27 million from 3,232 theaters, respectively. On Friday, Warcraft’s opening day debut is expected to be around $11 million, while Now You See Me 2 is predicted to launch with roughly $8 million.
James Wan’s The Conjuring 2 brings back Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, who are reprising their roles as husband-wife team of paranormal investigators. This time around, the duo tackles a new case (also based on a true story) that involves an 11-year-old girl who shows signs of demonic possession.
Next weekend’s box office brings the highly anticipated animated blockbuster, Finding Dory, the sequel to 2003’s Finding Nemo. The film is projected to hit at least $115 million – making it the biggest Pixar release of all time.
