Box Office: ‘Let’s Be Cops’ Laughs Its Way To $5.2 Million

The R-rated action comedy Let’s Be Cops opened to a strong $5.2 million at the box office on Wednesday.

Costing $17 million to produce, the 20th Century Fox film is expected to earn between $26 million to $28 million in its five-day debut. In comparison to similar comedies, Melissa McCarthy‘s Tammy opened with a decent $3.4 million and went on to rake in $33 million over the five-day Fourth of July weekend. Jennifer Anniston’s We’re the Millers debuted with $6.7 million last August and totaled $38 million over the five days.

The film features actors Damon Wayans Jr. and Jake Johnson who pretend to be Los Angeles police officers, but end up getting into real trouble. Additional stars include Andy Garcia, Nina Dobrev, Rob Riggle, Keegan-Michael Key, and James D’Arcy. Simon Kinberg, Aditya Sood and Luke Greenfield produced the film.

Below is the film’s official synopsis:

It’s the ultimate buddy cop movie except for one thing: they’re not cops. When two struggling pals dress as police officers for a costume party, they become neighborhood sensations. But when these newly-minted “heroes” get tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges on the line.

Let’s Be Cops, directed by Greenfield, faces stiff competition as it battles against holdover Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the newcomer Expendables 3, which opens August 14th at 7 PM. TMNT is expected to remain at the top of the charts with $30 million or more in its second weekend.

Who do you think will end up taking the No. 1 crown this weekend?
