Billy Bob Thornton doesn’t know if Bad Santa 2 is going to happen, but a script for the film is currently in the works.
The 58-year-old actor stared in the original Bad Santa when it was release in 2003. A sequel has been in the talks since 2009, but nothing official has happened since then. Thornton has admitted he really wants the sequel to happen, but does not know for sure if his wish will come to fruition.
Thornton said in a recent interview with Collider, “We all want it to happen…It’s all logistics. That’s this business crap, with the rights here, and a person who thinks this, and this person wanting that kind of script. It’s just that stuff. They’re still working on it.”
This past May, Doug Ellin, creator of HBO’s Entourage, signed up to rewrite an existing Bad Santa 2 script, with the possibly direct as well. Thornton claims script rewrites are one of the many reasons production for the film is at a snail’s pace.
“I think the mistake was that when they said they were gonna do it, we just said, ‘Yeah, we’re doing it.’ The fact of the matter is, we may be doing it. They are working on it. It could be the end of this coming year, or it could be next year, or never. That’s the real honest answer,” Thornton added.
Although Thornton wants Bad Santa 2 to happen, it won’t be the same without Bernie Mac and John Ritter, both of which sadly passed away a few years ago.
