Sony Picture Animation’s upcoming 3D film based on Rovio Entertainment’s best-selling app Angry Birds has found a pair of directors. Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly have been hired to co-direct the film, which will mark the directorial debut for both of them.
Neither of the rookie directors are strangers to animated films. Kaytis worked a lot with Disney, serving as an animator for the upcoming film Frozen, as well as Wreck-It Ralph. He was also the animation supervisor for Tangled and worked on the Oscar-winning short film Paperman. As for Reilly, he worked as a storyboard artist for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Hotel Transylvania.
“I’m very excited that Fergal and Clay have joined us, bringing with them their vast expertise,” Ravio Entertainment CEO Mikael Hed said. “They are two of the brightest rising talents in animation, and I’m confident we are building the right team to tell the story of Angry Birds and deliver an amazing movie experience to our fans.”
Angry Birds will be produced by John Cohen of Despicable Me and Catherine Winder of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. David Maisel of Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America is set to executive produce. John Vitti, who wrote The Simpsons Movie, penned the screenplay.
Angry Birds is currently planned to be released on July 1, 2016.
