‘Anastasia’ Musical Heading to Broadway
A stage musical based off of the animated 1997 film Anastasia is heading to the Great White Way.
Producers announced Tuesday that the show will make its Broadway debut at Shuberts’ Broadhurst Theatre on April 24, 2017. Earlier this year, the show premiered in Hartford, Connecticut, where it had a successful run. The Hartford cast starred Christy Altomare as Anya, a girl who may be the missing daughter of the last tsar of Russia, and Derek Klena as Dmitry, a young con man who wants to convince the Dowager Empress that Anya is her missing granddaughter. The two will reprise their roles for the Broadway production as well as John Bolton in the role of Vlad and Caroline O’Connor as Lily.
“After finishing a record breaking run in Hartford, we look forward to bringing the magic of Anastasia to Broadway audiences next spring,” producers Bill Taylor and Tom Kirdahy said in a statement. “In Hartford, we saw people ages 8-100 travel from all over the world to enjoy Anastasia’s enduring story.”
The new musical contains songs from the 1997 film as well as plenty of new numbers. Tony winner Darko Tresnjak is directing, and Terrence McNally wrote the book. Music and lyrics were penned by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, who had composed multiple songs for the film, including the Oscar-nominated “Journey to the Past.”
