The musical adaptation of American Psycho, based on Bret Easton’s Ellis’ 1991 novel of the same title, is making its way to the US for the spring of 2015 after world premiering last year in London.
The musical thriller, set to officially debut in March, will follow the controversial story about Patrick Bateman – an egotistical Wall Street broker by day and sexually deranged serial killer by night. A sequel to the 2000 feature film adaptation of Ellis’ novel, that starred actor Christian Bale, is currently under development at FX as a TV series.
Artistic director Rupert Goold directed the London production and will also direct the show at Off Broadway’s Second Stage Theater. Playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark) adapted the script, with music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik (a Tony Award winner for Spring Awakening).
“We’re going to put a bit more ‘psycho’ in the text and production; a little more horror and suspense,” said Sheik to The New York Times, who also mentioned he was writing new songs for the show.
“And there will be a lot more BLOOD!!!” added Carole Rothman, the artistic director of Second Stage.
Doctor Who’s alum Matt Smith played the lead Patrick Bateman in London. According to Rothman, the production set for the US will have an all-American cast, with announcements to be made at a later date.
A commercial run will depend on the reviews after the American Psycho musical opens in March. No specific dates have been set.
