Will Ferrell’s upcoming sports comedy Three Mississippi is going through major changes! Producers are now scrambling to find a new director as well as new co-star for the comedian.
The film was set to reunite The Other Guys co-stars Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell for a football comedy that involves two feuding families that have an epic touch football game every year at Thanksgiving. Wahlberg was originally slated to play the poor fool who always lost to Ferrell and his presumably obnoxious family.
One likely replacement for the role is Adam Sandler.
The changes come after the sinking box office sales of Peter Berg’s Battleship. Now Battleship’s movie studio, Universal, has cold feet for financing Berg’s next movie, Lone Survivor. In order to secure financing for the upcoming film Berg had to secure a big name star, and he got that in Mark Wahlberg. Now, instead of starring in Three Mississippi, Wahlberg will play the role of a Navy Seal on a doomed mission in Lone Survivor.
The second movie that is causing the line-up change in Three Mississippi is Will Ferrell’s own Anchorman 2. A movie that never was expected to be made, Anchorman 2 got the green light from the studio forcing Three Mississippi‘s original director, Adam McKay, to step down in order to focus on the upcoming sequel.
Now to replace both Wahlberg and McKay, That’s My Boy star Adam Sandler and director Sean Anders are in negotiations with the studio.
Will Three Mississippi ever be made?
A big part of whether Three Mississippi will ever be made could very likely fall on the success of That’s My Boy when it opens at the box office on June 15. Since it seems like Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s schedule will not line up anytime soon and production for Three Mississippi is expected to begin this fall, it’s going to be a close call whether this film gets the go. The film’s script is not by Happy Madison, therefore if Sandler signs on and wants any rewrites it is going to be on a very tight schedule.
But hey, it’s Hollywood. Anything can happen!
