2014 Is Packed With Biblical Movies

This year at least three major films telling tales from the Bible will be hitting the big screen.

The first one will hit the screen later this month on Feb. 28. Son of God uses sequences filmed for the History Channel’s mini-series The Bible that aired last spring, in addition to some new footage. That mini-series was a huge ratings success for the History Channel with an average of 11.4 million viewers per episode. The film, produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, focuses on the story of Jesus Christ from his birth to his resurrection.

Next, Noah starring Russell Crowe in the title role, will premiere March 28. This film, directed by Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), will tell the tale from the Book of Genesis of Noah and the disastrous flood that hit Earth. Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, and Anthony Hopkins also star in the film. Recent pre-screenings of the film has led to some controversy about its lack of Biblical accuracy. Due to the poor response to the film, producers are working to make some changes to it before its release.

At the end of the year, Exodus will arrive in theaters on Dec. 12. Christian Bale plays the role of Moses in this film which depicts Moses’ story as an Egyptian prince who then becomes a leader for the Israelite slaves in fleeing Egypt. Ridley Scott (Gladiator) directed the film, which also stars Aaron Paul, Ben Kingsley, and Sigourney Weaver. Scott, an agnostic, reportedly decided to have an untraditional representation of God in the film.
