Comic book movies are continuing to dominate movie theaters, with the newest cop action film, 2 Guns, coming in at #1 this weekend at the box office.
The Universal Pictures film, starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, brought in $27.4 million this weekend, making it the fifth-highest debut for Washington and sixth for Wahlberg. The film is based on the original Boom! Studios graphic novel series of the same name, featuring Washington as DEA agent Bobby Trench and Wahlberg as Naval Intelligence officer Marcus Stigman. In 2 Guns the duo must team up for an undercover operation involving drug traffickers and the CIA.
Head of distribution for Universal, Nicki Rocco, spoke about Washington and Wahlberg, “It was super casting, there was remarkable chemistry. The two of them work so well together. You see it on screen. [Director] Baltasar really gave them the energy to be able to do what they did in this film.”
Fox and Marvel’s superhero movie The Wolverine starring Hugh Jackman snagged the #2 spot with $21.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its total to $95 million. Family-friendly movie Smurfs 2 landed in the #3 position with $18.2 million and has earned a total $52.5 million.
