From a young age, every aspiring writer craves to be recognized for their own way of storytelling. Fortunately for Brittany Britto, her talents have not gone unnoticed. Britto is an award-winning journalist who currently reports on higher education in Houston for the Houston Chronicle.
Brittany Britto’s History
As a young girl she was fascinated with reading and writing scary stories. After following her passion to pursue writing in college, she earned her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Maryland. She moved to New York City to pursue modeling and freelance writing on the side. She also worked for a juice company in the meantime. Her lack of freelance writing skills sparked her interest to go back to school. She then went on to become a trained journalist with a master’s degree on multiplatform journalism. With her enhanced knowledge of storytelling, she landed a job with the Baltimore Sun as a general assignment features blogger and reporter. From there her career skyrocketed.
Brittany Britto’s Time at the Baltimore Sun
She wrote much about arts, entertainment, travel, and local stories that happened in the Baltimore area. She credits her experience living in Brooklyn for much of her understanding of culture. Additionally saying that it helps add color to her stories. Her most recent award-winning pieces include coverage on Baltimore culture. However, one of her proudest pieces that fueled her drive while being a journalist is her recent story on Baltimore’s distinct vernacular and language. Her story covered the way people speak with their different dialects and slang in their community.
“That story led me to the chicken box story, the dance story and I think what fueled that was the reaction from people… they were like ‘oh my gosh someone is writing about this and paying attention to this’ and also how other people related like ‘oh Baltimore talks like this or over he we talk like this’. Everyone could kind of connect and I think that was a cool thing. It brought people together to talk about stuff. It made people feel seen so that made me want to do it.” She said. She is now reporting on higher education at the Houston Chronicle and we look forward to reading her next story!
