Apple CEO Tom Cook debuted the company’s long awaited iPhone 5 today in San Francisco, Ca. Upgrades over its predecessor, the iPhone 4S, include a lighter, thinner and faster phone with a larger and clearer display.
The new iPhone is said to be the “world thinnest phone”, 18% thinner than the iPhone 4S. The new phone also weighs a full 20% less than its predecessor at only 4.8 oz. The improved A6 processor is twice as fast as the iPhone 4S and includes high-speed 4G LTE connectivity.
The iPhone 5 will be available with a 16G, 32G or 64G flash drive. The built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery allows up to 250 hours of standby time and 8 hours of talk time without having to recharge.
The new display on the iPhone 5 is larger and clearer than the iPhone 4S as well. The new 4″ screen is displayed with 336 pixels-per-inch at a 1136×640 resolution. With Retina display, the new 16×9 aspect ratio will make a huge difference when watching movies and television shows on your phone since the majority of Hollywood productions are shot in that aspect ratio. Thanks to the new screen the iPhone 5 will allow five rows of icon on the Home screen. This means less scrolling through your phone to find the app you’ve been searching for.
The iPhone 5 comes equipped with a rear facing 720p HD camera and a 8-megapixel, 1080p HD forward facing camera.
The phone will be available for $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB. There are currently only two color options available this year, an all-black with a slate back or white with white glass and silver aluminum.
Pre-orders will start on Sept. 14 and shipping begins on Sept. 21.
