It can often be difficult to separate the actor from the character and Tyrese Gibson has encountered that in his film career. The F9 star recently sat down with BackstageOL’s Dave Morales to discuss the new film and said, “Roman Pierce has also created certain challenges for me…It is this Roman Pierce character that has actually gotten in the way of movie roles that I really wanted.” Many actors experience this when they become part of a highly successful franchise as we’ve seen with Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter.
Although his Pierce is a fan favorite, it appears Gibson is itching for more serious dramatic roles. He goes on to say, “I am, in my opinion, more of a dramatic actor than I am comedy or humor, even though I do consider myself to be pretty funny.” That he is. His character alone is responsible for 90% of the laughs throughout all the films which is part of while the audiences love him so much. His back and forth jokes and “roasting” with fellow musician and actor Chris “Ludacris” Bridges has often stolen the scenes in many occasions.
Tyrese is so well-spoken and humble throughout the interview that he makes the viewers genuinely want to see him secure those roles he longs for.
As far as the Fast franchise, Gibson describes the journey as a “long limousine ride”. With two more installments on the way, we can’t wait to see what they have up their sleeves. See our interview with him below. Fasten your seatbelts because F9 hits theaters June 25th.
