Tom Cruise: Top Gun Maverick Premiere
When asked, “Of all the planes in this film series, what is your favorite and why?” Cruise jokingly told Morales, “Man don’t ask me that, that’s like asking your favorite child.”
The thrill-seeking actor obtained his pilot’s license in 1994, 8 years after filming the original Top Gun. Since then Cruise has purchased several private jets and airplanes to add to his collection.
He also learned how to fly a helicopter for 2018’s Mission Impossible: Fallout. Which featured Cruise and Henry Cavill battling it out in the air through death-defying stunts.
Cruise added that “I love the F-18 for what it is, of course, the P-51 (pictured below) is mine so I love the P-51. That’s my airplane that I’ve been flying for a long time, so any airplane I love.”

Cruise does love the F-18 however, the U.S. Navy did not allow him to pilot one for Top Gun Maverick. His scenes were filmed from the passenger seats of the F-18 just like all of the other actors in the film.
Cruise stated, “I can’t choose a favorite, it depends on the day…you’re not going to wear the same shirt every day…so sometimes you wake up you want to be an F-18 and sometimes you know a P-51.”
The P-51 Mustang mentioned in the interview is part of Cruise’s own personal collection and is featured in Top Gun Maverick.
Cruise also owns a Honda Jet Elite S, a 1944 fighter plane, and a Gulfstream G4 jet which is estimated at $20 million dollars.
