The Road to Breaking Bad with Patrick Sane
As the final few episodes of the hit TV series Breaking Bad enter pre-production, I had the pleasure of going Backstage with Houston’s own Patrick Sane to talk about his journey through the film industry and working on the multi-Emmy Award winning show Breaking Bad. This is his story.
Patrick spoke with nothing less than a voice that demanded authority and screamed ambition yet welcomed me with the humility of an old high school buddy that wanted to catch up over a few beers. Patrick openly talked about his troubled adolescence. He noted that becoming an actor had always been a dream since he was a child. Everything seemed to play out so perfect in the eager teenagers’ life up until one devastating moment.
It came time for Patrick to enter high school and he was dead set on attending a special school for the performing arts. While auditioning for placement in the school, the judge was blown away with the young teen’s performance. There was only one problem; grades. The judge told him he could do everything in his power to grant him enrollment into the school, but the final decision was not in his favor.
Patrick told me this was a massive turning point in his career. He felt as if his dream had been crushed. After forty years of jumping from job to job, experimenting in the music scene and a slew of “bad decisions”, Sane made the decision that had been waiting for him his whole life.
Patrick sold just about everything in his possession (including his truck) and focused on his dream. “I sold my stuff and joined the circus,” Patrick told me several times. Of course he didn’t say “stuff” but you can use your imagination on which four letter word fit the sentence.
Patrick started voice over work with talent agency Pastorini-Bosby three years ago. After attending a workshop for being on camera, Sane caught the attention of Tom Logan. Logan saw talent in Sane and recommended the agency to focus their attention on him.
Soon after, Patrick received his first head shots in February of 2011. He started appearing in many local films. This year a casting call was sent out for the hit TV show Breaking Bad. Patrick sent his audition tape in and got the part.
Patrick exclaimed that “being around the magnitude of professionalism of the crew of Breaking Bad was an amazing experience”. “Bryan Cranston (producer and star of Breaking Bad) worked with such dedication and mastery of his craft,” Sane noted.
Some say “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. Patrick begs to differ. I’m sure Patrick has a bright future in store for him and I am eager to see one of Houston’s rising stars tear through the scene.
Be sure to keep an eye out for Patrick Sane in the upcoming films Mulberry Stains and Doll Factory.
Catch the final half of season 5 to Breaking Bad airing Sundays on AMC starting in Summer 2013.
