McAvoy tells us which personality was the most difficult to master.
BackstageOL’s Dave Morales sat down with James McAvoy in this backstage interview to talk about his unique role in the upcoming thriller Split.
In the film, McAvoy portrays a man with 23 personalities who kidnaps and holds three teenage girls hostage. When asked about what it was like to work with director M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, The Visit), the actor described him as being “brilliant” and very detailed.
He explained, “Night is the most meticulous director that I think I’ve ever worked with… he knows exactly what he wants the movie to be.”
As for how he perfected each character’s personality – nine of which are portrayed in the film – McAvoy said, “I spent a good couple of weeks trying to figure out what each character should look like, sound like, move like.”
Synopsis:
Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all of the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey, Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him — as well as everyone around him — as the walls between his compartments shatter.
Split hits theaters Friday, January 20th. Check out the full interview with McAvoy below:
