Were you one of the many that saw remakes over the weekend?
There are quite a few to choose from- “Conan The Barbarian” returns in what could be another launch in the series of those flicks. Or perhaps you saw the latest “Fright Night”.
OR, maybe, you chose to see one of the original offerings currently playing at the box office. One of those, “One Day”, is the new dramatic movie starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess (of “21” and “Across The Universe” fame).
Hathaway plays Emma, an aspiring poet who happens upon Dexter (Sturgess) after leaving a graduation party. Both have just finished studies at the University of Edinburgh. The day the two meet is July 15, 1988. That is important because as the film progresses, we get to check in on the two for the next 20 July 15ths.
The two “escape” to Emma’s small and cramped apartment where they just sleep off their night of overindulgence. They are tempted to take their new friendship further, but resist and spend the next day becoming BFF’s.
Over the next 20 July 15ths, we learn that the two are really meant for each other. Emma has her on again, off again relationships thru her life and Dexter is a happy go lucky playboy who becomes a television star on a variety show. He becomes unhappy, gets consumed in typical star problems (drugs, alcohol and other Lindsay Lohan-esque type issues).
As we move into 2010 the two become more than friends and hope seems to be just around the corner for both.
“One Day” is directed by Lone Sherfig (“An Education”) and the screenplay was written by David Nicholls, who also wrote the bestselling novel.
The good? “One Day” is a romantic drama that shows how a relationship can grow and become a true friendship. We really feel like the two main characters actually “save” each other thru life’s trials and tribulations.
The bad? Some of the dialogue is (for lack of a better word) cheesy.
A lot of the movie is very predictable. At one major turning point in the film, almost TOO predictable.
I will give Hathaway and Sturgess good marks for their performances.
If you are looking for a romantic drama that will stay with you long after leaving the theater, this one is for you.
