Kurt Russell Talks Working with Kate Hudson on ‘Deepwater Horizon’

Deepwater Horizon, which premieres in theaters this weekend, is a biographical disaster thriller about the 2010 explosion of the oil rig that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico in which eleven crew members died. Kurt Russell stars in the film and takes on the role of oil rig manager Jimmy Harrell.

Russell has portrayed real-life figures in films before and has also done disaster films before, but Deepwater Horizon brought Russell one new experience: he worked with Kate Hudson, the daughter of his longtime partner Goldie Hawn, for the first time.

“It was great,” Russell said of working with Hudson for the one scene they have together.

He remarked that a “real familial thing” was happening during filming, with many of their family members coming together during the shooting of the film. “[It] added to the fun of our scene when we got to it, but the truth is that when you’re working as an actor, you sort of just go to work as an actor…You go to work on the character in that situation, and when my character sees her and she sees me, you know there’s a deep history there that is just coming to the fore for the first time. So the fact that our history is the right baggage for that was a good thing. It was a real good thing.”

“But I look forward to working with Katie in a more fulfilling environment, you know, where we get a chance to actually work together,” Russell added.

Deepwater Horizon also stars Mark Wahlberg, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, and Dylan O’Brien.
