Sony’s Pixels hits the North American box office this weekend, battling against other family-friendly holdovers Ant-Man and Minions for the top spot.
In an interview with BackstageOL, Dave Morales sat down with Pixels’ star Josh Gad as they both agreed how the action comedy consists of an original story that has never been done before in Hollywood.
“Nobody’s told the tale of Earth being invaded by video games,” said Gad.
In Pixels, Gad, Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Peter Dinklage play a group of men who must save the world from intergalactic aliens who are using the 1980s video games as the models for their attacks – including PAC-MAN, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Galaga, Frogger Q*bert and Space Invaders.
When asked how he became a part of the sci-fi film, the actor revealed that after getting a phone call from co-star/producer Sandler and director Chris Columbus pitching the unique idea, he thought it was “brilliant.”
Being largely impacted by video games while growing up in the 80s, Gad was enthralled to be a part of a film that brought these classic childhood games to life. “It’s like being a kid,” he said. “You’re getting paid to do something so fun and liberating.”
Pixels hits theaters July 24th, 2015. Check out the full interview below:
