Derrickson is a huge fan of Doctor Strange.
Dave Morales sat down with Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson in this backstage interview to talk about his fondness of the fictional superhero, challenges for a film such as this and more.
Derrickson, who grew up reading Marvel Comics, said he connected most with the Doctor Strange comics and so was very adamant on creating the film. “I think the fantastical supernatural qualities of it always spoke to me,” he said.
As for the challenges experienced, the director explained that his ultimate goal was to make something that was unlike the rest.
“There was a lot of experimentation. The fractal patterns we were working with; we were creating new software to create some of the matter-manipulation in the movie,” he said. “I wanted to make a movie with images that were new and fresh.”
Doctor Strange stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character, alongside Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Mads Mikkelsen and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Stan Lee also makes a cameo in the film.
The official film synopsis:
From Marvel Studios comes “Doctor Strange,” the story of world-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange whose life changes forever after a horrific car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he is forced to look for healing, and hope, in an unlikely place—a mysterious enclave known as Kamar-Taj. He quickly learns that this is not just a center for healing but also the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying our reality. Before long Strange—armed with newly acquired magical powers—is forced to choose whether to return to his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.
Doctor Strange hits theaters on November 4th. Check out the full interview with Derrickson below:
