Mel Gibson returns to directing for his first film since 2006’s Apocalypto for a World War II biographical film titled Hacksaw Ridge, which stars Andrew Garfield.
Check out the official synopsis from Lionsgate:
HACKSAW RIDGE is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss [Andrew Garfield] who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
To prep for his role as Doss, Garfield did much research about him.
“There was a lot of footage out there,” he said. “There’s a great documentary called The Conscientious Objector by Terry Benedict. That was a big resource for me. There was lots of books, there were articles, there was footage of him as a young man on This Is Your Life…I would watch that over and over again…because him as a young man was very, very different to him as an older, an older guy. Vocally, there was a lot to work on.”
“I visited his hometown, and then the town where he eventually retired, which was Chattanooga, Tennessee and walked his land and handled his tools,” he revealed. “That was something spiritual that kind of happened.”
Hacksaw Ridge also stars Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Hugo Weaving, Ryan Corr, Teresa Palmer, Richard Pyros and Rachel Griffiths.
