Sony has finally revealed the design of the PlayStation VR2 headset and controllers. Sony announced the second iteration of its VR headset in February 2021.
Today, in a blog post, senior vice president of platform experience, Hideaki Nishino, explained the slimmer and lighter design for the newest VR model. The headset has a similar (white and black) color scheme as the PlayStation 5.
Along with a change in design, the headset features new enhancements such as a lens adjustment dial and a new vent design.
Yujin Marisawa, senior art director at SIE who led the design for the PlayStation VR2, explains why he loves the new vent design so much in the blog post:
“When I started to work on the design for the PlayStation VR2 headset, one of the areas I wanted to focus on first was the idea of creating a vent in the headset to let air out, similar to the vents on the PS5 console that allows airflow. Our engineers came up with this idea as a good way to allow ventilation and avoid having the lens fog up while players are immersed in their VR games. I worked on many design concepts to achieve this, and in the final design, you can see there is a little space in between the top and front surface of the scope that contains the integrated ventilation. I am really proud of how this turned out and the positive feedback I have gotten so far. I hope our PlayStation fans will also agree, and I can’t wait for them to try it out.”
The Tech
Sony will finally be moving on from the PlayStation Move controllers with orbital-shaped controllers. The controllers have a circular orb design to represent “the 360-degree view that players feel when they enter the virtual reality world, so this shape captures it nicely, ” Nishino wrote.
The new headset supports eye-tracking, inside-out tracking, haptic feedback, 4k HDR, 90/120 Hz frame rates, 110-degree field of view and it connects to the Playstation 5 with one USB-C cable.
Horizon Call of the Mountain is the only game announced for the PlayStation VR2 so far. No release date or price was given for the headset just yet. The original PlayStation VR headset prices ranged from $400-$500.
The original PlayStation VR headset was the most comfortable and affordable of the “first generation” of VR headsets. The new upgrades and change of controllers look to make the PlayStation VR 2 a more household name.
