After a week that saw Microsoft purchasing Activision/Blizzard for nearly $70 billion dollars, it was only a matter of time before Sony made their next move. It is now reported that Sony is acquiring longtime Halo and Destiny developer Bungie, for $3.6 billion dollars.
Sony’s deal with Bungie is slightly different than their acquisitions in the past. Bungie will operate as “an independent subsidiary” within Sony. Bungie’s longtime success in live-service, multiplatform games was a huge driving factor of this massive purchase.
Sony CEO Jim Ryan also commented on the news with a look to the future.
“Expect more Playstation acquisitions soon. We aim to push the boundaries of the medium to its furthest limits.”
