Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Announced, New Starters Revealed

The ninth generation of Pokémon is making its way to the Nintendo Switch later this year. Nintendo has officially announced Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. The latest entries in the mainline series will be coming out in “late” 2022.

We of course got a look at the three new starters (pictured below), Sprigatito (a grass-type cat), Fuecoco (a fire-type croc), and Quaxly (a water-type duck). I will be going with Quaxly of course, look at that hairdo!

Developer Game Freak described the games as an “open-world adventure” and that the starters “take a new evolutionary step in the Pokémon main series.”

From the trailer, it appears that trainers will be exploring a mixture of picturesque landscapes, coastal beach settings, and large Spanish/Mediterranean-inspired cities.

The Pokémon Company also announced a new cartoon based on the Hisui region from the upcoming games. The new animated series will make its debut later this year.

Official Description

Here’s Scarlet and Violet’s official game description:

Various towns blend seamlessly into the wilderness with no borders. You’ll be able to see the Pokémon of this region in the skies, in the seas, in the forests, on the streets—all over! You’ll be able to experience the true joy of the Pokémon series—battling against wild Pokémon in order to catch them—now in an open-world game that players of any age can enjoy.
