Double Fine Picking Up Momentum

San Francisco based gaming company, Double Fine Productions, is finally picking up speed after what seemed to be a definite lull in activity. Less than 24 hours ago their Kickstarter page was brimming with excitement after reaching $1 million in backing for a new adventure game project, which was $600,000 over their goal.

In conjunction with the release of the game, the company will also be putting together a ‘behind-the-scenes’ documentary on the difficulty, fun, and mechanical genius that goes into making a project like this; this is a rare educational opportunity for gamers and non-gamers alike. Double Fine wants this documentary to be “an honest, in-depth insight into a modern art form,” and is “committed to total transparency with this project, ensuring it is one of the most honest depictions of game development ever conceived.”

Over a 6-8 month period, a team under supervision of Double Fine founder, Tim Schafer, will create a point-and-click adventure game. ” Where it goes from there will unfold in real time for all the backers to see.” Backers will receive private footage of the development documentary, input feelings and thoughts about the game’s content and direction, and will be able to test the game once a beta version has been released. $15 gets you to ‘backer’ status.

This news comes after Feb. 7 announcement that Markus Persson (creator of Minecraft) has offered to help fund a sequel for well-received Double Fine game, Psychonauts. Though the game received positive reviews and multiple awards, Psychonauts had dismal sales numbers; dreams of a sequel appeared to have evaporated. But now it seems that Tim Schafer has gotten a second chance–what he does with it? We’ll be waiting to see.
