Popular “Tonight Show” comedian David Brenner passed away peacefully at his home in New York City on Saturday afternoon. He was 78-years-old.
Since the 1970’s, Brenner had made over 150 appearances on the “Tonight Show” as a guest and substitute host for Johnny Carson, turning the former filmmaker into a nationally renowned comedian.
“David was one of the most respected and liked comedians by his peers,” his friend and publicist Jeff Abraham said Saturday afternoon. “He was always there helping a bright young comedian, whether it be Richard Lewis, Freddie Prinze or Jimmie Walker, and he was still doing it until the very end.”
Brenner was performing stand-up comedy up until a few months ago. Last New Years Ever he hosted a comic gig to showcase young, aspiring comedian.
One legendary comedian who credits Brenner for transforming him into a star is Richard Lewis.
“David Brenner was a huge star when I met him and he took me under his wing,” wrote Lewis. “To me, historically, he was the godfather of hip, observational comedy. He mentored me from day one. … His passing leaves a hole in my life that can never be replaced.”
